Looking for a gun, but don't know which serial number? The FBI released the National Firearms Information System (NFIS) on January 3rd, 2018. The NFIS includes nearly 16 million records of individual firearms and their owners that the FBI has collected over the course of years and made available to law enforcement and other authorized users. With this new data set, if you've lost your firearm's serial number, it is now possible to search by serial number to find exactly what you're looking for. How do I search by serial number? The search process is fairly straightforward. You can use the serial number of your lost or stolen firearm to create a search query that will return a list of results, based on various criteria you can select. The following terminal command will allow you to find records in the NFIS for all firearms with an "AR-15" serial number:Unlike most other digital databases available today, the NFIS is a printed record with an associated database. In many cases it is not possible to retrieve copies of records from the FBI, and instead they must be requested from law enforcement agencies in your area. If you have a lost firearm with a serial number that is not covered by the NFIS, you can request a "silent report" from your local police department. A silent report is an anonymous report with no details of gun or owner provided. A silent report may also be requested by e-mailing the FBI FirearmsTracing@ic.fbi.gov .There are no fees for most searches performed through the database, however there is a fee for Silent Reports and Requests submitted via email . For more information please refer to https://www.fbi. gov/services/cjis/nfis/requesting-information .The NFIS's search capabilities are not limited to serial numbers. You can also search by firearm make, model, caliber, and other identifying information. To learn more about the capabilities of the NFIS visit https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/nfis . How regularly is the database updated? This database is regularly updated and does not contain entries from before 1996. However, we strongly recommend searching for your firearm by make and model if you don't know its serial number – these records are regularly updated as new data comes into the system. For more information on how the NFRTR updates its records, please refer to https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/nfis/history .How do I get my lost or stolen gun off the list?If you know your gun's serial number, but it's listed as lost or stolen, you can request a correction to have it removed from the list. The FBI charges a $20 processing fee for any request submitted through their website. The fee for email requests is $25. Please note that there is no guarantee that your request will be accepted – if they cannot verify that it is your gun, they may deny your request.
