Runescape producer Jagex has ended the development of Runelite HD, a fan-made HD mod to this popular client, which is open-source developed for OSRS GP Old School Runescape, just when the project was scheduled to launch last Monday. The 11th-hour move has some Runescape users expressing anger over Jagex's decision . They've also said they'll move to other MMOs.

Runelite HD creator "117" posted on Reddit Tuesday, sharing the message he got from Jagex and was later confirm by Jagex in the company's own blog post. Runelite HD operates as a plugin that could provide significant visual enhancements to the basic Runescape and can be seen at 117's Twitter. Moderator 117 said they've spent about 2,000 hours over the last two years developing Runelite HD.

"Yesterday we spoke with the developers of known HD projects and requested the developers to stop working on their projectssince this is an area we are currently investigating directly," Jagex stated. Jagex addressed 117 with the news that the company's efforts to develop an HD rendition of Old School Runescape was "still fairly early in the exploration stage" however "very advanced."

"Naturally this means that any fan-driven project that seeks to cheap RS gold change the way Old School RuneScape looks will not be compatible with our own ideas," Jagex wrote to 117. "We consider it absolutely essential to have consistency in the way Old School looks so we're keen to ensure that our changes to the official version will be the only ones available.
