Runelite HD creator "117" posted to OSRS gold Reddit Tuesday, sharing the message from Jagex the company. The information was confirmed by Jagex in the company's own blog post. Runelite HD operates as a plugin which will give significant visual enhancements to the original Runescape and can be seen at 117's Twitter. Moderator 117 stated that they've spent about 2000 hours over the last two years developing Runelite HD.
"Yesterday we spoke with the developers of well-known HD projects and we asked them to stop development of their projects because it is a subject we are directly researching," Jagex stated. Jagex wrote to 117 that it was working on an HD edition of Old School Runescape was "still quite early in its exploration stages" however "very much in progress."
"Naturally this implies that any fan-driven initiative that seeks to change the way Old School RuneScape looks is not in line with our plans," Jagex wrote to 117. "We consider it essential to have consistency with regard to how Old School looks as a result, so we're trying to make certain that our official changes are the only ones that are available.
It is our hope that the announcement of Jagex along with the Old School team are tackling this project seriously is something that excites you, even though it does require us to be polite and ask you to stop your personal projects."
117 reported that they offered Jagex an option that included removing their project when Jagex had released theirs as well as buy OSRS GP giving Jagex "collaborative oversight" over the visual style of Runelite HD.
