They also worked their way through some text-based virtual worlds, claimed Julian Dibbell, now a technology transactions lawyer who once wrote about virtual economies as a journalist.

In the past of these gold farmers were mostly located in China. Many hunkered in makeshift factories, where they slayed virtual ogres as well as looted their corpses during 12-hour shifts. There were even reports of the Chinese government employing prisoners to create gold farms.

In RuneScape, the black-market economy that gold farmers supported was relatively modest until the year 2013. Others like Corne the 21-year-old computer programmer located in Arnhem, Netherlands, who was not willing to divulge his name, but placed bets on gold, and by the extension, real-world currency on duel with other players. "I enjoy money. If it's in real life or in RuneScape, money is nice to have," the man said on an interview.

Horn purchases a lot of his gold via middlemenwho buy gold in bulk from gold producers and then resell it through websites such as El Dorado or Buy OSRS gold  Sythe. Horn estimates he's spent between 4,500 and 5,000 euros on his belief that at one time was a gambling addiction.
