Cultural apropriation can be a issue, but people often talk about it the wrong way. By way of instance, if a new culture adopts say a necklace and it becomes a popular trend, but the civilization that invented it is viewed as backward for using it, that is problematic cultural apropriation.

I wanted the Brandy doll as a child, and my favorite Barbie was the dark skinned one with all the white and purple princess gown because she was pretty. When I'd play Barbie video games, Teresa was my favourite character.

I am white and when I was little I needed a Black Barbie over anything. This is the 80s in Canada. My mother went to many different stores trying to find a single and eventually had to special order it. The reason for for my want? My best friend was Dark and it made no sense to me if the folks around me weren't all white that my dolls should all be white. I also remember thinking how lovely the Black Barbie was.

The amount of people who would probably dislike this to oblivion most likely outnumbers the number of people who enjoy it.If I will customise my personality in a game I always play as a really big guy, frequently not white. I'm a white girl, I just enjoy playing as someone who looks different to me. I do not try to recreate myself, that doesn't interest me.
