A long time ago, Pandaria was part of the supercontinent of Azeroth, which was Kalimdor. The time came when the Sundering occurred and the country was forever divided, Pandaria avoided the catastrophic destruction. The Emperor Shaohao from the pandaren learnt important lessons from the local Wild Gods, the August Celestials in search of an answer to the predicted Sundering.
While on his travels he came to realize that even though it was impossible to stop it but he could help protect his own people. He made a sacrifice to seal WoW's land of Pandaria with a thick fog, obscuring it from the world at large and segregating it from Kalimdor by itself before it was dragged into the sea.
Since then the time of Shaohao, the pandaren have modeled the lessons Shaohao learnt, which is determination, inner strength, faith, and wisdom. When the Mists of Pandaria's release an Alliance vessel was pushed off its course by an Horde warship that was seeking refuge in the thick mists that covered the oceans of Azeroth.
The Horde ship chased after it until both vessels were destroyed in the waters of Pandaria's coast, and the survivors were washed up in a place they didn't know existed.
It just so happened that the particular Alliance ship was carrying the young Prince of Stormwind, Anduin Wrynn (a prominent character in the WoW's current WoW storylines). His father King Varian Wrynn requested that an elite team be sent to rescue him and the Horde's intentions were to investigate the new territory and claim the land for themselves. In the end, both sides gained an enclave in Pandaria however, the consequences of buy WOTLK Gold bringing their conflict to these mystical shores were grave.
